Writing for Rolling Stone magazine about the Philippines, PJ O'Rourke once said, "Freddie Aguilar is like the Bob Dylan of the Philippines except it doesn't do Freddie justice since he has a great voice and can carry a tune." Indeed, his song, 'Bayan Ko' meaning 'My Country' was the anthem of the EDSA revolution that toppled dictator Ferdinand Marcos in 1986.

Aguilar began his singing career in the clubs of Olongapo on Magsaysay Drive in the 60's and 70's. He still plays Monday nights at the Hobbit House in Manila. His string of hit songs include Anak, Estudiante Blues, Problema and Magdalena.
